The World Cup is everywhere right now. Finding the right spot to watch it? That takes strategy.
Here is the thing about World Cup watch parties. They are not all created equal. A crowded sports bar where you are craning your neck around a pillar to see the screen, paying $15 for a beer that tastes like it was poured yesterday—you do not have to put up with that.
What you actually want is a place with a friendly crowd that actually cares, food that matches the moment, and a vibe that makes you feel like you are in the host city, not just watching a screen.
So here is your escape guide. Three categories. Three ways to win.
But first, let us be honest about what you are really looking for.
You do not just want to watch the game. You want to feel it. The roar of a crowd when a goal goes in. The collective groan when a shot misses. The stranger next to you who becomes a friend for 90 minutes.
That is not going to happen in a sterile bar with the sound turned down and the lights turned up.
What you need is a place with intention. A place where the crowd actually represents the country on screen. A place where the food matches the moment. A place where you forget you are in the DMV and feel like you are in the host city.
That is the point. A feeling. Now let us find your spot.
USA vs. Australia (June 19)
The U.S. is already through to the knockout rounds? Not confirmed yet. But the final group stage game against Australia on June 19 at 3 PM ET is the one you do not want to miss.
The Fan Zone: National Mall
The official FIFA World Cup Fan Zone on the National Mall is the biggest screen in town. A massive Jumbotron with the Capitol as a backdrop. Free admission. Food and drinks for purchase. And the energy of thousands of strangers becoming temporary best friends.
The Juneteenth Twist: Tingey Plaza
This one is special. D.C. United is hosting a watch party at Tingey Plaza in Navy Yard on June 19 and 20, with youth soccer activities and local food. It lands on Juneteenth, and Metrobar is also hosting a day-long Juneteenth celebration alongside the USA vs. Australia match. Game and culture. That is a rare combination.
The Classic Bar: Duke's Grocery
Multiple locations. All games with sound. And for $12, you can get a 22 oz. World Cup Beer Boot filled with Stella Artois. Sometimes simple works.
The World Cup is a global tournament, and the DMV is a global city. Some of the best watch parties are the ones where the crowd actually represents the country on screen.
Haiti vs. Brazil (June 19, 9:00 PM ET)
This is the one. Haiti is in the tournament. They play Brazil on Friday, June 19 at 9:00 PM ET. And the DMV – home to one of the largest Haitian diasporas in the country – is showing up.
Here is where to go:
Kick Axe Throwing DC – 1401 5th St NE, Washington, D.C. The party starts at 4:30 PM. Caribbean pride, drinks, and axe throwing before the match. Yes, axe throwing.
Three Whistles – Brightwood – 6220 3rd St NW, Washington, D.C. Game on 75-inch screens. Adult tickets include two drinks and game-day food: pizza, burgers, fries. 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. Tickets on Eventbrite.
Espetus Churrascaria – 12500 Edgemoor Ln, North Bethesda, MD. Live broadcast on two big screens. High-energy soccer atmosphere. Food specials. Starts at 4:30 PM.
France Watch Parties: Alliance Française
The French Embassy may not be hosting public watch parties, but the Alliance Française de Washington DC is screening France's matches. France vs. Iraq on June 22, and France vs. Norway on June 26. A more intimate, cultural experience than a sports bar.
Germany and Austria: Prost
This one is easy. Prost in Mount Vernon Square is the official home base for Germany and Austria fans. German and Austrian drafts on tap. All tournament matches screened. If you want a crowd that sings the chants, this is the spot.
The Roof: Hi-Lawn
Rooftop at Union Market. Decorated like a soccer pitch. An 8-by-12-foot LED screen and a 100-inch TV. Soccer bingo. Picnic blankets on the turf. This is the fun option.
The Bar: Hook Hall
Transformed into "World Cup Bar DC." A 20-foot screen taking up an entire wall. Reserved communal tables for $25, which includes a bucket of beer. Go with a crew or make new friends.
The Waterfront: The Wharf
A 14-foot Jumbotron on Pearl Street. Free. Rain or shine. Extended hours for USA games. If you want to be outside and feel the city energy, this is the spot.
Pick a game. Pick a place with sound and soul.
Bring a friend. Make a new one. Check the match times before you go.
The World Cup is a month-long excuse to leave your house. Do not waste it.
Note on upcoming games: The schedule above covers the next week of matches. The tournament runs through July 19, with the knockout rounds starting June 28.
