Weekend Joys: 6 Upcoming Sweet, Savory, and Sky-High Escapes

Image

Don't you hate when you really need the weekend to get here so you can do something—and then when it finally comes, you hate it because you can't find anything actually fun? And it's all the same events you've been to a hundred times?

Yeah. We know the feeling.

So here are a few excellent ways to spend the upcoming weekends. (In some cases, you don't even have to wait for the weekend.) Ice cream socials. Rooftop parties. Food festivals requiring stretchy pants. Steel drums and carnival dancers. This is not a drill. Let's go.

1. Teaism's 30th Anniversary Ice Cream Sundae Party (Penn Quarter, DC)

The joy: Obanyaki ice cream sundaes. Live mellow music. Complimentary tea sampling. Thirty years of one of the DMV's first fast-casual spots—and they're throwing a party to prove it.

When: Saturday, June 6, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM (two sessions: 12–1:30 PM and 1:30–3 PM)
Where: Teaism Penn Quarter, 400 8th Street, NW, Washington, DC
Cost: Free entry. Eventbrite ticket required for the sundaes. Details: Teaism's 30th Anniversary Ice Cream Sundae Party | CulturalDMV

Why go: Because an ice cream sundae made with Snow Crane ice cream and a warm obanyaki is not something you find every day. Also, free tea. Also, thirty years is a long time. Show up and say congratulations.

2. National Caribbean Festival on the Rooftop (Downtown DC)

The joy: Steel pan music. Carnival dancers. Live DJs. Island energy above the city skyline. The MLK Library rooftop transforms into a vibrant Caribbean experience for Black Music Month.

When: Sunday, June 14, 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Where: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library – Rooftop, 901 G Street NW, Washington, DC
Cost: Free. Details: National Caribbean Festival on the Rooftop | CulturalDMV

Why go: Because a rooftop + steel drums + good weather = a weekend joy that costs nothing but your presence. Bring your dancing shoes. Bring your flags. Bring a friend who needs to smile.

Performers include: The Image Band, DJ Slice, Proverbs, East of the River Steel Band, Rhythm Section, and carnival dancers.

3. The 5th Annual Taste of the DMV (Baltimore)

The joy: Over 200 food and drink vendors. Craft beers, wines, and spirits. Live music on multiple stages. A kids zone. A car show. This is the big one.

When: Friday, June 19 (Adults Only Beer Garden, 6 PM – 1 AM), Saturday, June 20 (12 PM – 8 PM), Sunday, June 21 (12 PM – 6 PM)
Where: M&T Bank Stadium – Lots B, C, F, G & H, Baltimore, MD
Cost: Varies by day. All ages welcome Saturday and Sunday. VIP entry at 11 AM both days. Details: The 5th Annual Taste of the DMV | CulturalDMV

Why go: Because it's the DMV's biggest food and culture festival for a reason. Two hundred vendors. Tasting plates for 5−5−10. Free samples. A beer garden. A car show. A kids zone. You will leave full, happy, and already planning for next year.

Pro tip: Saturday is the main event. Arrive early. Bring cash for vendors. Wear comfortable shoes. Pace yourself on the samples. Tons of parking at M&T Bank Stadium, and it's steps from the Light Rail.

4. Official F1® Arcade Monaco Grand Prix Watch Party (Navy Yard, DC)

The joy: Watching the Monaco Grand Prix on massive screens at an F1-themed arcade. Open sim racing before and during the race. Live in-venue entertainment. This is for the speed demons.

When: Sunday, June 7, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM (doors open 8 AM, race starts 9 AM)
Where: F1 Arcade DC, 420 Penn St NE, Washington, DC
Cost: From $30.45. Details: Official F1® Arcade Monaco Grand Prix Watch Party | CulturalDMV

Why go: Because Monaco is the crown jewel of the F1 calendar—the narrow streets, the tunnel, the yachts in the harbor. Watching it on a couch is fine. Watching it with other obsessed fans while racing sims is better. Sim racing opens all morning. First-come, first-served seating.

5. NVA Thai Street Food and Culture Festival (Manassas, VA)

The joy: Authentic Thai Street food. Traditional dances. Cultural demonstrations. Dozens of vendors. And here is the best part: everything priced at $8 or lower.

When: Multiple dates through October. Upcoming: May 31 and June 14. Details: NVA Thai Street Food & Culture Festival | CulturalDMV
Where: Downtown Manassas, VA
Cost: Free admission. Food available for purchase ($8 or less!).

Why go: Because you have been craving good pad Thai Because you want to watch traditional Thai dance. Because free admission means you can spend your money on what matters—extra spring rolls and maybe two orders of mango sticky rice.

6. Taste of the Town (Salisbury, MD)

The joy: An Iron Chef-style competition where local restaurants battle for bragging rights. Unlimited tastings. One drink ticket included. You get to be the judge.

When: Thursday, June 4, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Where: Dove Pointe, Salisbury, MD
Cost: $25 for Chamber members, $35 for non-members (advance), $45 at the door. Details: 17th Annual Taste of the Town with Delmarva Eats. | CulturalDMV

Why go: Because you have never been a food competition judge before. Three categories: Simple Tastes (crowd-pleasers), Signature Tastes (chef-inspired), and Delectable Desserts. You sample. You vote. You leave with a full stomach and a sense of power.

Pro tip: Advance tickets available through June 3 at 5:00 PM. Do not pay the door price. Plan ahead.

The Bottom Line

Ice cream sundaes. Rooftop steel drums. Two hundred food vendors at a stadium. Monaco on big screens with sim racing. Thai street food under eight dollars.

All of it is here. All of it is very close. All of it is waiting for you to say yes.
