The Strathmore Spring Bump: Your May-June Concert Lineup

Image

I have got a playlist ready for you. We are rolling through North Bethesda, windows down, and I am going to point out every show you cannot miss between now and the end of June. Think of me as your slightly detail obsessive, caffeine-fueled navigator who has already checked the setlists, studied the parking situation, and figured out which moves you should make next.

Buckle up. Strathmore just dropped its May-June lineup, and it is ridiculously cool.

The Headliners

Jason Mraz – May 26

Let us get the obvious one out of the way first. Jason Mraz is coming. Acoustic set. Hits AND deep cuts. He is a Grammy winner, a Songwriters Hall of Fame honoree, and the reason half of us learned to play guitar badly in college. This is not a festival singalong. This is him alone (or nearly alone) with a microphone, pulling out songs you forgot you loved. Expect to cry a little. Do not fight it.

Renée Fleming – May 27

Here is where things get interesting. Fleming is a five-time Grammy-winning soprano. Legit. World-class. But she is not just standing there singing opera. She is pairing music with National Geographic film. The theme? Humanity's bond with nature. You are going to hear one of the greatest voices of her generation while watching footage of whales and mountains. This is next level sound bath.  A spa treatment for people who do not like spas.

Andrew Bird with the National Philharmonic – June 3 & 4

Andrew Bird is a violinist who became an indie-rock cult hero. He whistles. He loops. He writes songs about obscure historical events and makes them feel like lullabies. Now put him in front of a full orchestra celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Mysterious Production of Eggs. This is for the music nerds. You know who you are. Bring tissues.

Cécile McLorin Salvant – June 11

Three Grammys. A voice that can do jazz, folk, and Baroque in the same set. She is not a belter. She is a storyteller. She will make you lean in. If you have never seen her live, fix that. If you have, you already bought your ticket.

Patton Oswalt – June 20

Comedy night. Oswalt is an Emmy and Grammy winner who does pop-cultural commentary like a standup philosopher with a deep love for obscure '80s movies. He will make you laugh. He will also make you think about why you laughed. That is the best kind of comedy.

Straight No Chaser – June 23

A cappella. Beach Bash theme. Powerhouse vocals. This is the one where you bring your mom or your cool aunt. They will sing songs you know in arrangements you did not expect, and somewhere around the fourth song, you will realize you are smiling.

Jesse & Joy – June 24

Six-time Latin Grammy winners. Brother and sister. Latin pop, folk, acoustic. They are huge. If you have not heard them, start with "¡Corre!" and go from there. This show will sell out. Do not sleep on it.

Chris Botti – June 26

Grammy-winning trumpeter. Lush jazz-pop. All-star band. Botti is the guy who made jazz feel like a Saturday night. If you want a date night show, this is it. Dress up a little. You will want to.

The Residents

Strathmore's Artists in Residence program is the secret weapon here. These are artists who get time, space, and resources to develop new work. You get to watch them figure it out in real time.

Juan Manú – May 13, 20, 27

Vocalist, guitarist, violinist. Mexican heritage. Queer voices. Mariachi, folk, original compositions. We wrote about him after the Bernard/Ebb Awards. He is the real deal. His residency shows are intimate. You will be close enough to see his hands move. Go to one. Thank me later.

Kanysha – June 10, 17, 24

R&B. Funk. Soul. High-energy. She is releasing her debut album during this residency. That means you could hear a song a few days before the rest of the world. That is not nothing. Kanysha is a powerhouse. Go ready to move.

The Bloom Series

These are at the Good Hope Recreation Center in Silver Spring. All free.

Silkbeat – May 9

Duo JChris and Qi Yu. Afro-Peruvian rhythms. East Asian traditions. Chinese zither. That sentence alone should make you curious. This is the kind of cross-cultural weirdness that makes the DMV special. Go. It is free. What are you doing?

Christylez Bacon & Friends – June 13

Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist. Beatboxer. Global music traditions. Christylez is a D.C. native. He has performed everywhere. He will do things with his mouth that you did not know were possible. Bring kids. Bring skeptics. Bring yourself.

The Gallery Show

"Intersections" Exhibition – May 9 through June 10

Artists Breanna Cee Martins and Steven Luu explore ancestral memory and trauma. The opening reception is May 14 with an artist talk. This is for the slower part of your day, after the caffeine wears off and you need to sit with something.

The Practical Part: Parking

Okay, let us talk logistics. Because nothing kills a concert buzz like circling a garage for 20 minutes.

The main garage is the 1,500-space behemoth at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro station, connected to the Music Center by a covered skybridge. It is massive. You will find a spot. The catch is the exit. When 2,000 people leave at the same time, there is a wait. One reviewer put it bluntly: "It does not take an engineering degree to figure out that there will be a wait". Bring your phone. Catch up on social media. Make peace with it.

Here is the good news: Parking is free with your ticket for ticketed shows. Yes, free. A bonus in this economy. Also, the exit gates open for 30 minutes after each show. Leave within that window, and you roll right out. If you don't—bathroom stop, merch line, lingering in the lobby—you will need to show your ticket stub to the Metro attendant to exit. Keep it handy.

Pro moves:

  • Street parking, when available, allows you to skip the post-concert garage jam entirely. Arrive early and circle the neighborhood.
  • Valet parking is available if you are feeling fancy.
  • The Metro's Red Line drops you at Grosvenor-Strathmore station. The skybridge connects directly to the venue. No parking stress at all.

Consider this your official permission slip to get excited. You have the dates. You have the parking intel. Now all you need is a ticket and a night off.
