A collective of tenants residing in Montgomery County has voiced their concerns regarding precarious living conditions and safety issues at The Enclave Silver Spring. The property management team has accumulated a staggering number of violations since February, and tenants are now demanding immediate action. The Department of Housing and Community Affairs has issued over 2900 violations, ranging from chronic elevator malfunctions to severe child endangerment due to a bed bug infestation. Shockingly, one complaint even involved the discovery of an unattended woman's corpse within the building.
County Executive Marc Elrich believes that a legislative remedy is essential to address such issues not only at The Enclave but also in similar situations across the county. Progressive Maryland, a working-class political organization committed to creating a Maryland where the state government and its economy benefit all working-class Marylanders, especially communities of color, made a groundbreaking announcement. They have joined forces with tenant residents and dedicated elected officials to finally address the long-standing issues at The Enclave, underscoring the urgent necessity for change and prompt resolution of tenant grievances.
This collaboration has led to the formation of a tenant union with The Enclave residents, providing them with a potent tool to stand up for their rights and demand justice. County Executive Marc Elrich, Montgomery County Council Member Kristin Mink, and State Delegate Lorig Charkoudian have called upon Rose Valley Management and Hampshire Properties to respond to the demand letter presented by Progressive Maryland's Tenant Association within a strict 10-business-day timeframe.
Progressive Maryland firmly believes that no one should live in the shadows of their own home, worrying about whether they can afford their rent or mortgage due to inadequate incomes and soaring expenses. They pledge to continue working alongside tenants at The Enclave to enhance living conditions and advocate for local and state policies that prioritize the well-being of renters over the interests of landlords and developers.
