Extreme Heat Alert: Montgomery County Issues Warning for Thursday Afternoon

Image

Montgomery County has issued an Extreme Heat Alert for Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Officials warn that the combined heat and humidity will drive the heat index above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. That is not just uncomfortable. That is dangerous. Heat-related illnesses are a real risk, and emergency officials are urging residents to take precautions now.

Stay Hydrated. Stay Cool.

Drink water throughout the day—even if you are not thirsty. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic drinks. They dehydrate you faster.

If your home lacks air conditioning, head to a county library, swimming pool, or shopping center. Public cooling spaces are open and available.

Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if you or someone else shows:

  • A body temperature of 103°F or higher
  • Confusion, slurred speech, or irritability
  • Hot, red, dry skin or profuse sweating
  • Nausea, vomiting, or rapid breathing
  • Fainting or unresponsiveness

While waiting for help, move the person to a cooler area and use cold cloths or ice to lower their temperature. Do not give them anything to drink.

Protect Yourself and Others

If you must go outside, reschedule strenuous activities for early morning or evening. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Take frequent breaks in the shade.

Never leave children, seniors, or pets in a parked car. Temperatures inside can reach lethal levels in minutes. Keep pets indoors, provide plenty of water, and protect their paws from hot asphalt. Check on elderly neighbors who live alone.

The Bottom Line

The heat is real. The risk is real. Stay hydrated, stay cool, and check on the people around you. This alert is in effect for six hours. Take it seriously.
