Looking for something to do this weekend that won't cost a dime? You are in luck. From community band concerts and international embassy tours to a neighborhood music festival with over 100 bands, the DMV is full of free events this Friday through Monday.
We have curated a list of highlights below, starting with free events right here in Takoma Park.
FREE Takoma Park Community Band Concert – Friday, May 1, 7:30 p.m. at the Takoma Park Community Center Auditorium (7500 Maple Avenue). Doors open at 7 p.m. Founded more than 50 years ago, the band is a diverse group of professional and amateur musicians who will present a free concert highlighting the vast geography of the United States. The program includes compositions by John Philip Sousa, the Beach Boys, and several film composers, with readings from the literary works of Dorothy Parker, Mark Twain, Maya Angelou, and others. Donations will be collected to support the band.

Rhythms of the World Festival - the See Forever Foundation kicks off Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month with the "Rhythms of the World" festival at the Maya Angelou Public Charter School’s Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C. This free community celebration, running from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, showcases the vibrant cultural contributions of the AAPI community through a series of captivating live performances
Dupont Circle ArtWalk – First Friday of every month. Art galleries, embassies, and cultural centers around Dupont Circle open their doors for a self-guided gallery walk. Free and open to the public; you can start at any open location.
First Fridays with The Darts (DMV) – 9:30 p.m. at O'Sullivan's in Arlington. Free punk concert to kick off the month.
Adams Morgan PorchFest – 2–6 p.m. across Adams Morgan. Over 100 local bands perform on residential porches, front yards, and commercial streets across more than 25 stages. This bi-annual, free, all-ages music festival is one of the neighborhood's signature events. Grab a free wristband at info booths (Columbia and Adams Mill Rd., 2424 18th St., or in front of Marie Reed School) for discounts at local businesses.

Passport DC – Around the World Embassy Tour – Throughout May, with multiple embassy open houses. More than 65 embassies open their doors to the public for free, no registration required. This year, participants include Cuba, Lebanon, Maldives, and Singapore for the first time. Two major "information hubs" at Dupont Circle and the UDC Student Center will feature live performances, cultural dances, and child-friendly activities.

Flower Mart – Friday and Saturday at the Washington National Cathedral (also free on Friday, May 1). The 87th annual festival includes booths selling herbs, perennials, annuals, and other greenery, plus a book sale, festival food, rides, and games for children.
The Running of the Chihuahuas – Saturday at The Wharf. The 14th annual race benefits Rural Dog Rescue. Only chihuahuas can race, but all breeds are welcome in the dog costume contest.
Sound Scene – Saturday and Sunday at the Hirshhorn Museum. An interactive sound and multisensory arts festival with hands-on workshops, live performances, and creative works by artists from around the world. All ages, free.
Eagle Festival – 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at Mason Neck State Park, Lorton, VA. Live animal shows, hands-on educational opportunities, outdoor recreation clinics, live music, and food—all free (standard park parking fee applies).
Passport DC continues – Embassy of the Republic of Korea activities and K-Pop dance performances; Embassy of Thailand martial arts demonstrations; and a "Caribbean rum battle" between Jamaica, Barbados, and Haiti.

EU Open House – Friday, May 9. European Union embassies open their doors for authentic music, dance, food, film, and art.
Eagle Festival – Saturday, May 9, Mason Neck State Park (see Saturday listing).
Bike to Workday – Friday, May 15. The 25th annual free event celebrates bicycling as a low-cost, healthy, and environmentally friendly way to commute. The first 18,000 to register and attend a pit stop will receive a free commemorative T-shirt
