What Happens When the First Day of Spring Hits

Image

For me, Spring is the season of new attractions. It is a time to be delightfully distracted—even startled—by the sudden burst of bright colors, the rhythmic chatter of tweeting birds, and those first fragrant flowers as nature jolts back to life. While it feels like a sharp pivot from dormancy to fervency, it’s a shift we’ve been quietly rehearsing for months. From the very second that first crisp, winter scent hit our noses back in December, we’ve been internally prepping for the Equinox.

Spring is an invitation to be an attraction just as much as it is to witness one. It’s the moment we finally expand our beings beyond the heavy armor of sweaters, gloves, and knit caps. There’s a certain liberation in breaking out that bright cardigan you’ve been eyeing in the closet. It makes me think of that hand-woven Ethiopian scarf from the gift shop in Union StationAbro Collective, that was the place! It’s high time for a return visit to see what else they’ve brought in for the new season.

That excitement for something new extends to the pavement, too. Back in the midst of February's windy nights, while wrapped head-to-toe against the chill, I was already visualizing myself in fresh exercise shoes. Now, it’s finally time to gear up for the streets of Takoma Park. I’m looking for that perfect pair: something technical enough for a long walk, but sharp enough to wear to the bar when meeting up with friends.

Most importantly, Spring is the season to shed toxicity. As we open ourselves to these new sights and sounds, our thoughts start to smile more, our inner voices find their song again, and our eyes take on a certain brightness. We tend to think of Spring as something happening out there in the gardens and parks, but the truth is, the most important blooming is happening inside of us.

As we step into this new light, I wish you a season filled with vibrant discoveries and the courage to let your own inner glow shine just as brightly as the world around you. May your walk be light, your heart be open, and your Spring be truly life altering.
