Nestled at 641 D Street NW in Washington, DC, the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company is more than just a performance space—it's a creative powerhouse. Since its inception in 1980, Woolly Mammoth has been shaking up the theater scene with daring performances and a commitment to new, thought-provoking works.
The Spark of an Idea
In 1978, Howard Shalwitz and Roger Brady, two ambitious actors from New York, dreamed of a different kind of theater—one that would break the mold and challenge audiences. Washington, DC, with its vibrant energy and diverse population, was the perfect backdrop for their venture. They teamed up with Linda Reinisch, and together they set out to create something extraordinary.
The trio's first season took place in a church hall near Metro Center. The intimate setting was just the beginning. Their innovative approach quickly gained attention, and soon they outgrew the space. They moved to a warehouse on 14th Street, where they performed for 13 memorable years. Eventually, they became a nomadic troupe, bringing their unique productions to various venues across the city.
A Permanent Home
Woolly Mammoth finally found a permanent home at the corner of 7th and D Streets NW. Designed by the acclaimed architect Mark McInturff and Theatre Projects Consultants, the modern theater seats 265 and features sleek, glass-walled rehearsal and classroom spaces. The two-tiered lobby buzzes with excitement before and after shows, creating a lively community hub.
