Coppélia Presented by Metropolitan Ballet Theatre & Other Things to do This Weekend: Friday, Mar 15 - Sunday, Mar 17

On March 16th and 17th, 2024, the Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center in Rockville, Maryland will come alive with the whimsical charm and enchanting story of "Coppélia", presented by the Metropolitan Ballet Theatre. This classic comic ballet, originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon with music by Léo Delibes, promises to captivate audiences with its delightful tale of love, magic, and mistaken identity.

Set in a picturesque village square, the story revolves around the eccentric Dr. Coppelius, a lonely old alchemist who is both feared and ridiculed by the villagers. Living in his two-story house on the outskirts of town, Dr. Coppelius devotes his days to his most prized creation - Coppélia, a lifelike mechanical doll whom he believes he can bring to life through his magical experiments.

Meanwhile, the vivacious Swanilda, portrayed as one of the most beautiful girls in the village, eagerly anticipates her upcoming marriage to Franz, her beloved fiancé. However, their happiness is soon threatened when Franz becomes infatuated with Coppélia, mistaking her for a living, breathing woman. Determined to uncover the truth behind Coppélia's mysterious allure, Franz ventures into Dr. Coppelius' home, unwittingly putting himself in grave danger.

With its blend of humor, romance, and enchantment, "Coppélia" is a timeless ballet that continues to captivate audiences of all ages. From the lively village scenes to the magical moments within Dr. Coppelius' workshop, each scene is brought to life through exquisite choreography and the evocative score of Delibes.

In addition to the main performances on March 16th and 17th at 4:00 PM, the Metropolitan Ballet Theatre is also hosting a Special Toymaker's Tea Event, offering patrons the opportunity to immerse themselves further in the enchanting world of "Coppélia".
