In the vibrant world of contemporary dance, Grupo Corpo stands out as a trailblazer, pushing the boundaries of ballet and modern dance. Founded in 1975 in Belo Horizonte, southeastern Brazil, by the visionary Pederneiras siblings, this dance theatre company has not only become one of Brazil's most successful performing arts organizations but has also captivated global audiences with its unique fusion of classical technique and popular Brazilian dance.

A Family's Vision:

The story of Grupo Corpo is a testament to the power of familial bonds and a shared passion for the art of dance. Growing up in Belo Horizonte, the Pederneiras siblings—Paulo, Rodrigo, Pedro, Miriam, and Jose Luis—realized the absence of a professional dance company in their city. Fueled by their love for dance and a desire to create something extraordinary, they embarked on a mission to establish their own company.

Paulo Pederneiras, the artistic director, has been at the helm of Grupo Corpo since its inception, shaping its artistic vision and contributing as a lighting and set designer. The family connection extends further, with Miriam overseeing social projects, Pedro as the stage engineering designer, and Jose Luis capturing the company's essence through stunning photography. Even the next generation is deeply involved, with Pederneiras' son, Gabriel, serving as the technical director, and Gabriel's wife transitioning from a dancer to a choreographer.

The success of Grupo Corpo extends far beyond Brazil's borders. The group has been on a global journey, enchanting audiences worldwide with their dynamic and evocative performances. The international acclaim they have received is a testament to their ability to communicate universal themes through the medium of dance, transcending linguistic and cultural barriers.

Recent performances by Grupo Corpo have left an indelible mark on the global dance scene. The 2023 double bill at the University Musical Society featured two distinct works, "Bach" and "Gira," showcasing the group's versatility and innovation. The reviews from their performance at the Boch Center Shubert Theatre, as covered by The Harvard Crimson, highlighted the spiritual revival ignited by Grupo Corpo on stage.

As Grupo Corpo continues to evolve, there is a keen eye on the future. Pederneiras has plans to bring forth a new choreographic voice, emphasizing collaboration with his daughter-in-law, who has transitioned from being a dancer to a choreographer. This commitment to nurturing the next generation of choreographers ensures that Grupo Corpo's legacy will continue to thrive, offering fresh perspectives and pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance.
