As the cold winds of January sweep through Washington DC, residents of the DMV area are gearing up for a couple of snowy days ahead. The National Weather Service predicts two days of snow, with a total accumulation of 1.38 inches, bringing a winter wonderland to the region.
The snowfall is expected to begin on Friday, January 19, with approximately 1.3 inches covering the city. Following closely, Saturday, January 20, will bring an additional 0.08 inches of snow, turning the DMV into a picturesque scene.
With temperatures ranging between 28°F and 41°F, residents are advised to bundle up in warm clothes to brave the chilly weather. The 2023-2024 winter season has brought more snow than the past two winters combined, with only 0.4 inches recorded last winter.
Meteorologists have been closely monitoring the potential influence of a strong El Niño on this year's weather patterns. Earlier predictions hinted at the likelihood of one to three "Winter Storm" level weather events, with an above-average chance of a blizzard-level storm. The anticipation is building, and it seems the first significant winter storm might be just around the corner.
Remembering the record-setting winter of 2009-2010, where the D.C. area received over 50 inches of snow, it's essential to note that this year's El Niño is not expected to be of the "Modoki" variety. "Modoki" El Niño was responsible for significant snowfall in the winters of 2002-2003 (40.4 inches) and 2009-2010 (56.1 inches). However, this year's pattern is different, though still promising a winter wonderland for area residents.
Looking at the detailed forecast for the upcoming days, the National Weather Service predicts partly cloudy conditions overnight, with a low around 19°F (currently 16°F). Thursday will be mostly cloudy, reaching a high near 37°F. Snow is likely to start after 1 am on Thursday night, with a chance of less than half an inch of accumulation.
Friday brings the possibility of more snow, mainly before 1 pm, with a high near 34°F. The weekend follows with mostly cloudy skies on Friday night and a sunny day on Saturday with a high near 27°F. Saturday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 18°F.
Sunday brings sunshine to the region, with a high near 32°F. Sunday night remains mostly clear, with temperatures dropping to around 17°F. Residents are advised to stay updated on the weather forecasts and be prepared for the potential snowy days ahead.
As the nation's capital embraces the beauty of winter, the region is set to experience a charming mid-January with snow-covered streets and the promise of more winter magic to come.
