Step Into the Sound: A Free, 360-Degree Orchestral Experience at Strathmore

If you have ever sat in a concert hall and felt the vibrations of a symphony move through you—the low pulse of cellos, the shimmer of violins, the weight of brass—you know how those sounds can stay with you long after the lights come up. Now imagine stepping inside them.

This Friday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m., the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO) All-Star String Intensive presents "Dreams and Hallucinations," a free, 55-minute immersive performance in the Strathmore Lobby. You won't just be sitting in a seat—you will be moving freely around the musicians as they play, experiencing the music from every angle.

What You Will Experience

The performance is the culminating event of the All-Star String Intensive (ASSI) week at Strathmore, a program that brings together the region's most talented high school string players for an intensive week of rehearsal and collaboration. Under the direction of Maestro Kristofer Sanz, MCYO's Artistic Director and conductor of the Philharmonic, these elite young musicians have been rehearsing a passionate and moving new orchestral suite.

The 55-minute piece, "Dreams and Hallucinations," is designed to let your subconscious come out to play. It is not just a concert; it is an invitation to experience music in a new, intimate, and immersive sonic environment where you become part of the performance.

More Than a Concert: A Reset

This is not a typical orchestra concert. It is a chance to walk around the musicians and experience the music as it flows around you. The 360-degree setup allows you to feel the sound from every direction, creating a more personal and intimate connection with the music.

There is something deeply restorative about this kind of participatory experience. Research shows that communal music-making lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), increases oxytocin (the bonding hormone), and helps regulate the nervous system. When we move and listen together, our heart rates and even brainwaves can synchronize. It is a powerful antidote to the isolation and burnout so many of us carry.

In many traditions this is well understood. In Africa, the ritual of ngoma—a Bantu term encompassing drum, song, and healing—uses call-and-response and communal participation as tools for therapy and social cohesion. "Dreams and Hallucinations" echoes that ancient wisdom: a shared sonic ritual where the boundary between performer and audience dissolves, allowing healing to happen.

About the Performers

Founded in 1946 as the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra, MCYO is the oldest and most established youth orchestra program in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It has been a resident partner at the Music Center at Strathmore since 2005 and now serves over 550 talented musicians in grades 2-12 across multiple orchestras and ensembles.

Maestro Kristofer Sanz is the Artistic Director of MCYO and conductor of the Philharmonic. He is known for his ability to draw highly musical, professional, and nuanced interpretations from young musicians. Under his direction, the All-Star String Intensive has become a highlight of the Strathmore summer, offering these young musicians a unique opportunity to grow as artists and collaborators.

Why You Should Go

It showcases some of the finest young string talent in the DMV. And it offers something rare: a chance to let the music move through you and around you, and to remember that we are not alone.

Space is limited, so plan to arrive early. Let your subconscious come out to play.
