"Where We Belong": Exploring Identity and Belonging at Folger Theatre
On the evening of Sunday, March 10, 2024, the Folger Theatre at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, will present the final compelling solo performance of "Where We Belong." This production, produced in collaboration with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, invites attendees on a thought-provoking journey through the intricacies of identity, history, and belonging in an ever-evolving global context.
The storyline follows Madeline Sayet, a Mohegan theater-maker, who, in 2015, embarks on a journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare. Instead of encountering a welcoming and inclusive environment, Madeline discovers a nation unwilling to confront its ongoing involvement in colonialism. This realization coincides with the Brexit vote, heightening concerns about the UK's increasing isolation from the global community.
"Where We Belong" serves as a stirring solo piece that draws parallels between Madeline's personal journey and that of her Native ancestors in the 1700s, who grappled with the consequences of treaty betrayals. Madeline's compelling performance encourages audiences to contemplate the significance of belonging in a world shaped by interconnectedness.
Having premiered globally in June 2021, the play captivated audiences with its poignant storytelling and resonant themes. Subsequently, "Where We Belong" embarked on a successful national tour, leaving its mark on renowned venues such as the Philadelphia Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Seattle Repertory Theatre, The Public Theater, Portland Center Stage, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
For those eager to witness this powerful production, tickets are available for purchase on the Cultural DMV Calendar.
The play has received recognition from various media outlets, with The Washington Post commending Madeline Sayet's autobiographical solo show, "The production is framed against centuries of Mohegan history and Shakespearean influence, crafting a distinctive and compelling narrative."
DC Theater Arts emphasizes the powerful intersection of Shakespearean and Indigenous narratives in "Where We Belong," characterizing Madeline Sayet's solo play as a unique and compelling approach to grappling with intricate issues.
As its run ends today, March 10, 2024, the play has garnered positive reviews and critical acclaim. "Where We Belong" emerges as a testament to the potency of storytelling in addressing intricate historical and contemporary issues. The play's success and critical acclaim underscore the significance of diverse voices in the realm of theater, offering audiences an opportunity to engage with narratives that both challenge and inspire.
To celebrate and honor members of the Indigenous community, complimentary tickets are available through the entire run of the show to those who identify as part of the community. To redeem this offer, please contact the Folger Box Office at (202) 544-7077.
