According to Coyote - The Trickster Tales of Native American Mythology.

In 1987, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., witnessed the premiere of "According to Coyote," a one-man show created by John Kauffman, a talented Nez Perce actor and playwright. The Nez Perce, also known as the Nimiipuu people, have deep roots in the lands that encompass the contemporary Nez Perce Reservation in north-central Idaho. Today, the Nez Perce Tribe stands as a federally recognized tribal nation, boasting a population exceeding 3,500 citizens.

John Kauffman took his captivating production on a tour predominantly across the Northwest, sharing the timeless stories of Coyote until his untimely passing in 1990. Enter Josephine Keefe, the niece of John Kauffman and the eventual director of the revived play. Growing up immersed in her uncle's performance through repeated watching of his video from the Kennedy Center, Keefe harbored a deep desire to resurrect "According to Coyote." Her vision materialized when she found the perfect candidate to step into her uncle's shoes - Kellen Trenal Lewis, a Nez Perce individual and a familiar face from his recent appearance in "Reservation Dogs."

As a dancer and singer with a rich cultural background encompassing African and Native American heritage, Kellen was well-acquainted with the stories that unfolded in "According to Coyote." Josephine Keefe's instinct to cast him in the lead role turned out to be a stroke of brilliance. Lewis seamlessly embodies the mischievous spirit of Coyote and other characters, breathing life into a collection of cherished stories from the Great Plains, Southwest, and Plateau Native nations.

The revival of "According to Coyote" is a testament to the enduring power of Native American storytelling. The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, situated on Fourth Street & Independence Avenue, SW, is set to host this extraordinary performance at 2 PM on both Saturday, Feb. 10, and Sunday, Feb. 11. Audiences are in for a treat as Kellen Trenal Lewis weaves together the timeless tales of the trickster Coyote, offering a unique and immersive experience that transcends cultural boundaries and celebrates the rich tapestry of Native American mythology.
