Takoma Park, a city renowned for its spirited Halloween celebrations, transformed into a realm of enchantment on Saturday, October 28th, as The Monster Bash unfurled its eerie charm. With a day-long program that promised dancing and merriment, this annual event was a bewitching delight.
The festivities commenced at the stroke of 1 pm, drawing residents and visitors alike to the heart of Takoma Park. The highlight of the day was, of course, the Costume Parade and Contest, where ghouls, ghosts, and fantastical beings of all kinds paraded through the streets. It was a captivating spectacle, with imaginative costumes and creative ensembles.
As the clock inched toward 2 pm, the young ones of the neighborhood descended upon the high school grounds on Maple Avenue. Here, they reveled in the delights of a colossal maize maze, their laughter and exclamations echoing through the maze's twists and turns. Despite unseasonably high temperatures for the season, families arrived on foot and bike, lining the closed Maple Avenue, each one eager to partake in the festivities.
The musical backdrop to this magical day was provided by none other than The Grandsons, a band renowned for their exuberant sound. Described as "American music in a blender with the lid off," their performances are nothing short of a musical cauldron of rock, swing, and New Orleans parade melodies. Jim Farif, the band's upright Bass guitar player, expressed the band's excitement as they set up for their special children's music set, known as "The Grandsons Jr." The accolades for this kid-friendly version of the DC-area roots rock superstars included being voted "Best Children's Artist" an impressive four times by the Washington Area Music Association.
The joyful harmonies and lively rhythms filled the air, drawing children and their parents to dance and sing along. Takoma Park resonated with the joyous melodies of The Grandsons, adding an extra layer of enchantment to this extraordinary day.
As the sun dipped, the Halloween celebration drew to a close, leaving behind memories of mirth and enchantment. Takoma Park's Halloween celebrations, forever etched in the hearts of those who attended, continue to be a bewitching tradition, eagerly anticipated year after year.
