DMV Halloween 2026: Festivals and Things to Do Before Oct 31

Halloween in the DMV doesn't happen on one night. It builds—across three weekends, through a dozen neighborhoods, in ways that range from family-friendly to genuinely unsettling. Here's where it's happening.

Boo at the Zoo

Dates: Friday, Oct. 16 – Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: Smithsonian's National Zoo, 3001 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC

The vibe: After-hours trick-or-treating trails, animal viewings, and enough costumed toddlers to make you forget you're on your third lap of the same pumpkin patch.

Air & Scare

Dates: Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Location: Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, 14390 Air and Space Museum Pkwy, Chantilly, VA

The vibe: Indoor trick-or-treating and creepy crafts underneath the Space Shuttle Enterprise—because nothing says Halloween like a ghost story told in a hangar full of actual aircraft.

Cox Farms Fall Festival & Fields of Fear

Dates: Fall Festival: Sept. 19 – Nov. 8, 2026. Fields of Fear: Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 25 – Nov. 7, plus a bonus night Sunday, Oct. 11, 7:30 PM – 11:00 PM.

Location: 15621 Braddock Road, Centreville, VA

The vibe: By day, giant slides, hayrides, and Foamhenge. After 7:30 PM, the farm turns into a haunted cornfield, a dark hayride, and a forest trail that is absolutely not for the kids.

Clark's Elioak Farm

Dates: Daily through Nov. 8, 2026. Halloween Costume Parades: Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24–25, parades at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Location: 10500 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD

The vibe: A storybook farm with an enchanted forest, a petting zoo, and pumpkin picking—plus a costume parade for kids who want to show off their outfits before the actual candy grab.

Master Logistics: What You Actually Need to Know

Go early. Rural farm roads in Loudoun and Howard counties turn into one-lane gridlock 15 minutes after gates open. Arrive 15–30 minutes before opening.

Carry cash. Cell signals drop in farm country. Apple cannons, pony rides, and food trucks often run on paper tickets, not card readers.

Book ahead. The DMV is competitive for fall events. Cox Farms tickets are online-only. Air & Scare's outdoor portion requires free timed tickets released Oct. 1 at 7 PM ET.

Check the weather. October in the DMV swings from 80°F afternoons to 45°F dusk. Water-resistant boots are non-negotiable for muddy fields. Check farm social channels before departing—heavy rain closes tractor tracks and modifies corn mazes.

Costume safety. Non-toxic face paint over vision-blocking masks. Reflective strips or glow sticks for evening events. Write parent contact info on a wristband for young kids.

Pet etiquette. Short leashes only. Watch for dropped candy and chocolate. Keep dogs clear of costumed crowds.

Mix one large farm festival with one urban pop-up and you've covered both ends of the DMV Halloween spectrum. Start with Boo at the Zoo, finish in a haunted cornfield, and you'll understand why this season builds rather than arrives.
