There is a specific kind of magic that happens when a community decides to celebrate itself—not as a reaction to anything, but simply because joy is worth gathering for. On Sunday, August 16, that magic returns to Silver Spring.
The 4th annual Hey Cousin Culture Fest: Celebrating Black Joy @ The Plaza takes over Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM. It is free. It is family-friendly. And it is proof that grassroots traditions can become essential pillars of a community in just a few short years.
The Origin: A Festival Built by Women, for the Community
The Hey Cousin Culture Fest was launched in 2022 by two women community leaders: Leeand Diggs Alcide of Diggin Her Roots Boutique and Janae Johnson of Janae Danielle Consulting & Design. Their vision was simple but powerful: to celebrate, uplift, and support their communities and the beauty of Black culture.
What started as a gathering has scaled into a prominent downtown Silver Spring tradition. Over four years, the festival has become an essential staple for uplifting local Black culture, Black-owned small businesses, and family-friendly entertainment.
The festival's mission—welcoming everyone as "cousins"—reflects a belief in the power of shared identity and unity within the Black diaspora.

Live Entertainment
Local music artists and DJs will keep the energy high all day. Youth and community dance teams will take the stage, showcasing the talent that lives in the DMV's neighborhoods. The festival transforms Veterans Plaza into an open-air stage where the crowd becomes part of the performance.
